Articles Here are some rules for using articles.
You use the definite article (the): • when you talk about something mentioned before. I saw a man with a gun in the street yesterday. Then a car pulled up, the man jumped in and the car drove off. • with something there is only one of. The winner received a gold medal. • with certain geographical/place names. The Mediterranean is becoming more and more polluted. • with certain public places. I really should go to the theatre more often. • with something that both the speaker and listener know about. We went to the new Indian restaurant last night. You use the indefinite article (a/an): • when you talk about something for the first time. I've got a cat called Leonardo. • with jobs. My father is a doctor. • with singular countable nouns (when the person or thing is not a particular one). Let's go to see a film tonight. You use the zero article (no article): • with abstract nouns (used in their general sense), plural nouns and uncountable nouns. Music is very important to me. • with most geographical/place names. I went to Spain last year. • with certain places or situations, eg hospital, home, school. He has been in hospital for three weeks now.
